On Mondays I hit up the Parliament House for game night with my gaymer friends. We have a great time battling it out every week. One weekly favorite game is “Name That Tune,” where there is always a theme. This week the theme was all-time great girl group songs. We knocked it out of the park but I was curious what defined an all-time girl group song, so I went to Billboard to find out.
According to Billboard:
For over five decades, girl groups have been an integral part of U.S. pop music by providing Top 40 radio with some of the catchiest tunes of all time. From “Wannabe” to “Weak,” from the heyday of Motown to the explosion of 80’s pop-rock to the R&B collectives of the 2000’s and everything in between, girl groups have long had immense success in our culture, and the Billboard Hot 100 chart wouldn’t look quite the same without them.In celebration of girl groups as part of Pop Shop’s Girl Group Week, Billboard is presenting the 40 biggest girl group songs of all time! This ranking is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart through the tally dated May 3, 2014. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. To ensure equitable representation of the biggest hits from each era, certain time frames were weighted to account for the difference between turnover rates from those years.
